What is LETS?

LETS schemes (Local Exchange Trading Schemes) are voluntary, non-profit-making groups, run and managed by their members. 

Each year members receive a Directory showing the skills available from all members, and the things they'd like help with.  It includes everyone's contact details, so all you need to do to arrange a trade is get in touch with someone who you think might like to trade!  The regular Newsletters keep us all up to date with what's going on.

You do not have to arrange a direct swap.   Each LETS scheme has 'currency' and Wallingford LETS scheme's currency is called 'Castles,' so if you have earned some Castles from one member, you can use them to ‘pay’ for a service provided by any other member.  You 'pay' using your Wallingford LETS 'chequebook', and our Recorder keeps track of your Castle balance.

Where is Wallingford?

Wallingford is in Oxfordshire, between Oxford and Reading, in the South of England.  Our members come from Wallingford and the surrounding villages.  If you live further afield, the LETSLINK UK site may be able to help you find a LETS scheme near you.

But I can’t do anything!

Of course you can! Have a look at the Skills Offered page, or maybe you could:

n  Help out with cleaning, decorating, ‘grotty jobs’! Lawn cutting, pruning, weeding, digging

n  Be an extra pair of hands for house-moving or children’s parties

n  Collect visitors from the station, driver to the airport, late-night lift home from the theatre

n  Hire things out (e.g tent, barbeque, tools, camcorder)

n  Walk the dog and water the plants for people away on holiday

n  Trade veg and fruit or fresh herbs

The basic rate for trades is six Castles per hour, but if you are offering a professional skill that deserves a higher rate, this is open for you to negotiate with your 'client.'  If you use materials (wood, food, paper) you can charge in real pounds for these.

Not forgetting that we have fun together too...

Wallingford LETS is also very sociable!  We have frequent events including:

n  Guided walks in nearby beauty spots

n  Treasure hunts

n  'Table top' sales

n  Murder Mystery evenings

n  Parties!

Anyone over the age of 14 can join.  Membership costs £6 per year, which pays for postage, printing, and other costs incurred by the Core Group.
